Norway has some heavy duty names in exploration.
Arne Naess summited Everest in 1985, leading one of the must successful Everest expeditions ever. No less than 17 expedition members made the summit, from the South Col SE ridge.
The expedition was famous for being very well organized, and included some well known names such as Ang Rita Sherpa (his then 3d summit), Dick Bass (who later coined the idea of the "seven summits"), Imax filmer David Breashears, and Chris Bonington (expedition "Captain").
January this year, Arne sadly died in a climbing accident in South Africa.
Polar aces
Roald Amundsen was the first human to ski to the South Pole, his torch later proudly carried by modern Norwegian star polar veternas such as Rune Gjeldnes and Torry Larsen (first and only unsupported Arctic ocean crossing), Liv Arnesen (first woman unsupported and solo to the South Pole), Borge Ousland (first Arctic/Antarctic solo crossings) and Rolf Bae/Eirik Sonneland (a spectacular Antarctic traverse in December 2000).
Sjur Mørdre, another polar farer, is the most skilled polar expedition outfitter today - his extremely lightweight style is the key to many of the polar expeditions successes.
K2 lightweight style
Now Norwegian lady climber Cecilie Skog intends to join the fine ranks. Cecilie summited Everest North May 23 this year, climbing with the Himalayan Experience team.
While on Everest, her boyfriend Rolf Bae (the above mentioned Antarctic traverse) and climbing partner Trym Atle Sæland mapped out a new route on Shisha. Together, the couple had climbed Cho Oyu before - and now they want more!
The guys are off for K2 next summer, led by yet another Norwegian polar veteran: Simen Mørdre, brother of Sjur Mørdre (aka the "Murder brothers"). Team members are Rolf Bae, Trym Sæland, Cecilie Skog and Per Henry Knudsen (base camp manager).
They'll climb the South/South-East Spur (Abruzzi) and will try to climb as light as possible, probably merging the Mørdre brother's skills of lightweight polar travel with modern mountaineering.
