The three South Korean climbers missing on K2 since Tuesday have been found dead, the alpine association of North Kyongsang Province said today.
Five members of the expeditionary team discovered the bodies at a point some 200 meters below the scene of the accident (6,600m) at around 5:40 p.m. Thursday after a search operation, according to the association.
The three members, identified as Lee Hwa-hyong, 36, Kim Jae-yong, 35, and Pae Kyong-kyu, 34, were found dead in their sleeping bags in a crevace covered with snow.
The association will send three representatives to K2 in two to three days to recover the bodies.
The team, consisting of 11 members of POSCO staff, left for China April 22. They planned to return to Korea by July 23 after reaching the top of K2. The three went missing after an avalanche struck Tuesday morning while they were sleeping at Camp 2 6,600m.
