Adventure Tours Pakistan released the news that the 50% concession in royalty fee granted to climbing expeditions during 2002-2004 will now continue into 2005. The status of 6500m peaks as trekking peaks will also remain applicable during the current season. This important decision was made at an urgent meeting between the Alpine Club of Pakistan and the Minister and Secretary Tourism held at the Ministry on Feb 10, 2005.
"Other important matters of concern to mountaineering activity also came under discussion and it is hoped these will soon be notified to give the much needed boost to mountain tourism."
Peak fees
K2's royalty fees: 6000 USD for a team of seven, 1000 USD each additional climber.
All other 8000ers, Gasherbrum I and II, Nanga Parbat, and Broad Peak: 4500 USD for a team of seven, 750 USD each additional climber.
7500 to 8000 meters: 2000 USD for a team of seven, 250 USD each additional climber.
7000 to 7500 meters: 1250 USD for a team of seven, 200 USD each additional climber.
6000 to 7000 meters: 700 USD for a team of seven, 100 USD for each additional climber.
Record visitor numbers in 2004
Field Touring Alpine adds the following information:
"You will have to engage a MOT (Ministry of Tourism) approved trekking guide for peaks under 6500m, but this is a minimal fee compared to the headaches and cost of the usual LO system.
There has been significant pressure on the MOT this year from vested interests within the airline, tourism and hospitality sectors within Pakistan, to maintain the stimulus provided by last seasons K2 50th anniversary celebrations, and subsequent record visitor numbers.
With Nepalese inbound visitor numbers in freefall, and Pakistan enjoying a safe and stable political enviroment, combined with the flow on effect of some 6000 trekkers and climbers that went into the Karakorum last season, it
will likely be another bumper year for Karakorum tourism."
