First there was the Everest Base Camp clinic, set up by Dr Luanne Freer, HRA and ExplorersWeb on Everest South Side 3 years ago. Now the idea of medical emergency camps on high altitude is spreading, and K2 is next up.
Global Medical Rescue Services Ltd., a worldwide remote medical services, training, and physician medical control provider, will be providing a complete K-2 Base Camp Medical Clinic during most part of the 2005 climbing season.
The clinic staff consists on a 15 member team, who will accompany a scientific expedition sponsored by The National Geographic Society, NASA, and the National Science Foundation.
Physicians and geologists
The medical team will be composed of physicians, medical students, and paramedical professionals from the University of Nebraska’s School of Medicine. They will provide medical care to the climbers in the area and conduct a health needs survey in remote villages.
As for the scientific expedition, it will be coordinated by University of Nebraska’s Department of Geology. Their members are geologists from around the world, all of them specializing in the Himalayas.
To be continued?
On arrival in Pakistan on late May or early June, a portion of the expedition and medical team will proceed immediately to K2 Base Camp while the remainder will conduct additional science duties and the village health survey.
Although this expedition is a one time event, there are tentative plans to continue the project annually.
In 2004 a medical dispensary in Askole was set up by the huge Italian team involved in the project “K2 50 years after”. Askole is the last village before entering the Baltoro area, however, K2 base camp is days away.
