Italian K2 SUMMIT VIDEO!
Agu 2, 2004 18: 34 EST
The Italian team has just sent an awesome video showing the final sections of the climb up to the very top of K2. Images show the best moments from Camp 4, the traverse under the Great Serac, the bottle neck and the final ridge to the summit.
On the morning of July 26th Silvio Mondinelli and Karl Unterkircher were the first climbers to reach the summit of K2 this season. Silvio made the tracks in deep, unstable snow, while Karl worked shifts with him to open some very exposed pitches above the bottleneck. The Italians stepped on the summit at 15:30, local time, followed close by Spanish 'Al Filo de lo imposible' team members Mikel Zabalza, Juan Vallejo, Edurne Pasabán and Juan Oiarzabal. Then Ugo Giacomelli, Walter Nones and Michele Compagnoni came up.
The Italian team writes that they all reached the summit without using supplementary O2. So did the Spanish, though Oiarzabal was administered O2 when he was rescued hours later. He got lost on his way back and was found off route semi unconscious by climbing mate Ferrán Latorre, around 100m (300 ft) from C4.
Well, images tell it all, so check out their brand new summit video here!
