The increasing number of female climbers was one of the interesting subjects in the past K2 season. Several girls attempted to break the spell of K2, trying to become the first female K2 summiteer alive. Basque Edurne Pasaban finally made it, becoming the sixth woman to summit K2.
With some luck, number seven is coming up next year. RussianClimb reports that Marina Ershova from Saint Petersburg, plans to climb K2 via the Abruzzi Spur next spring.
Marina has earned the Snow Leopard (summiteer of the five highest peaks in the ex-Soviet union) and also summited Cho Oyu in 2000 and Shisha Pangma in 2002, as a member of the Jubilee Everest expedition in 2003, when she was a team leader of the Russian section, summitting as part of a Russian/Dutch combo. Only one Russian woman has attempted K2 before: Elena Kulishova, back in 1992.
Marina Ershova was born October 3, 1961 in Saint Petersburg (Russia). Her high-altitude climbs include: Korzhenevskaya Peak, 7105 m (1989, 1990); Lenin Peak, 7134 m (1991, 1992, 1993); Peak Communism, 7495 m (1989, 1991); Khan-Tengri, 6995 m (1992); Pobeda Peak, 7439 m (1992); Cho Oyu, 8201 m (2000); Shisha Pangma, 8012 m (2002)
