Edurne Pasabans Sixth 8000er Fastest Ever
14:52 p.m. EDT Jul 28, 2003
Wasted but jubilant - Spanish/Basque Edurne Pasaban is heading home to celebrate her 30’s birthday on Friday. With her summit of Hidden Peak – the more difficult of the two Gasherbrums – Edurne this Saturday joined the top 4 lady 8000ers summiters of the world.

The list is crowned by mountaineering legends Wanda Rutkiewicz, Pl (8) and Chantal Mauduit, Fr (6) who both tragically perished in the mountains. Wanda died on Kangchenjunga and Chantal gave her life to Dhaulagiri.

With yesterday's GI summit and the GII summit eight days ago, Edurne, Sp, equals Christine Boskoff’s, US, 6 successful 8000ers summits.

After failing Dhaulagiri in 1998 and Everest in 1999 Edurne has had a streak of successes lately: Mount Everest (8848m) 2001, Makalu (8485m) 2002, Cho Oyu (8188m) 2002, Lhotse (8516) 2003 Gasherbrum II (8034m) 2003 and Gasherbrum I (8080m) 2003.

Edurne has reached the top of the list in a record speed. Two years and two months ago she had not yet stood atop her first 8000er! Only in the past couple of months she has scaled three 8000ers - a feat never before accomplished by a woman.

Check out the new unique list of women with 2 or more 8000ers on Adventure Stats.

Please note new heights for Cho Oyu, Makalu and the Gasherbrums.
