Women of K2: Nadia Tiraboschi in the shadow of Nives
Jul 15, 2004 15: 07 EST
It looks like our series on the women of K2 has drawn the attention of admirers around the world. Last week a reader wrote to ExWeb about the quiet Swiss girl, Joelle Brupbacher. Well today we received another email about a female climber; Nadia Tiraboschi. Nadia has been climbing the whole time right across the mountain from Nives Meroi. With the caliber of climbers on K2, she could have been easily missed but apparently she has at least one fan out there who saw to it that she be profiled.
Nadia Tiraboschi was born in the mountain town of Oltre il Colle, Bergamo, Italy. In May of 1967, Nadia opened her eyes to a world of Alpine mountains and, in what seems like her destiny, grew up to be an accomplished Alpine Guide with a specialization in skiing and the newly popularized canyoning.
She has climbed some extremely difficult (ED) routes in her career, including; Le maillon Manquant, Pedro polar, Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Cassin alla Punta Walker, Mont Maudit - Directissime Roger Baxter Jones, Capucin via Bonatti on the Mont Blanc Massif.
Her highest altitude to date was on the summit of Aconcagua (6,962 m). And she can boast a range of other international climbs as well; Cerro Torre, Fitz Roy and Island Peak to name a few.
Along with Nives Meroi, Nadia is one of the two women of the Italian K2 expedition both are from Bergamo.
As of today, July 12th, Nadia is in Camp 1 with Karl Unterkircher and Sergio Minoggio. Tomorrow several climbers will go up to Camp 3 (7500+) to complete preparations for the summit bid.
