Urubko and Amangeldy
12:53 p.m. EST Jan 7, 2004
On December 28th, Urubko took the Amangeldy speed climb. His winning time was 1 hr and 15 min. Second and third place finishers, Artem Rychkov and Denis Grinevich were just six minutes behind. They crossed the finish line neck and neck, within 3 seconds of each other.
Afterwards, Urubko waxed philosophical about the race. "Why and where are you going!? – something shouts inside of me. – you are the idiot!… Once I have already done it. I have set up the record, won the competition. And not once. What still do I need now?"
Of the 44 people at the start, Denis was the guy everybody was looking at. Andrej Puchinin, who took second at the Khan Tengri speed climb also participated in the Amangeldy race, although he finished out of the top three.
It wasn’t until about 3450m on the 3999m mountain that Urubko broke free from the competitors at his tail…The rest they say is history.
