Update on Magic Line's Jordi Corominas
Agu 16, 2004 12: 17 EST
In the latest update, around 6 pm local time, Jordi Corominas was still around 80 meters from the summit. He was tired but clear in his radio report. The problem was very deep snow on the final slope.
Meanwhile, Oscar and Manel have reached the safety of camp 3 on the Magic line route. Valen has left the Abruzzi and is heading back to BC. The Japanese team have chosen to remain in Camp 4 and wait for Jordi, instead of climbing back down.
The climbers say that Jordi can not return on the Magic line. He needs to reach the summit, find the Japanese tracks there and follow them to the fixed rope leading down to camp 4 on the Abruzzi.
Oscar Cadiach and Corominas left their tent at 8100m this morning at 4:00 am, local time, as planned. Oscar Cadiach decided to turn around, when the climbers encountered deep snow. Jordi continued up alone. At 2:00 pm, local time, there were only 100 vertical meters between him and the summit.
He had already passed all the technical sections, and there were only some steep snow fields to climb. The weather was good; Jordi has been reportedly climbing without gloves most of the time. The mountain side has sheltered him from the wind, but deep snow on the "easy" section became a problem.
Meanwhile, the Dosanko Japanese expedition reached the summit on the Cesen route. The Dosanko team, lead by Mr. Masahide Matsumoto, is a small four-members team, two of them designed as a summit team, and two others supporting their mates and working on the route. The Japanese have agreed to provide a place for Jordi in Camp 4 (shared both on the Abruzzi and Cesen routes).
The head of the current "Tarragona Magic Line Expedition 2004" is Oscar Cadiach, who has done 5 expeditions to Everest, 2 of which reached the summit. Cadiach has also climbed Nanga Parbat, Shisha Pangma, Makalu and Lhotse. He opened the route 'Free Tibet' on Cho Oyu and did a new route on Broad Peak central. Manel de la Matta climbed Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma. Jordi Corominas climbed Dhaulagiri alone.
