Three Korean Climbers Missing on K2
Jun 10, 2004 14: 42 EST
It is reported that three South Korean mountain climbers are missing after an avalanche struck Tuesday while they were attempting to scale K2. POSCO, the South Korean steel producer sponsoring the climb identified the missing as Lee Hwa-hyong, 36, Kim Jae-yong, 35, and Pae Kyong-kyu, 34.
Six members of the team are reported to have been hit by the avalanche Tuesday morning while they were sleeping at the second camp at a point around 6,600m. The other three members of the team returned to base camp after the incident. Continuing snowfall has reportedly kept the other members away from the scene.
POSCO tried to contact the camp, but was unable to ascertain the exact situation due to bad communications, a company official said.
The alpine team for K2, consisting of 11 members of POSCO staff, left for China April 22. They planned to return to Korea by July 23 after reaching the top of K2.
