Russians for K2 West Face first ascent
Jun 2, 2005 01: 20 EST
The climb is set for 2006, but the expedition starts already on June 15 this year. A small team will reach the bottom of K2 West Face (Pakistan side), set a Base camp, and choose the route line for the 2006 climb.
20 of Russia's strongest climbers, most awarded for great achievements in mountaineering have been selected for the virgin climb of the Mountaineer's mountain. A film crew will document all stages of the climb with six videocameras.
Last year, the Russians made big waves in Himalaya by their climbs of Jannu and Everest North Face. This year, out of 320 climbers, only 14 summited Cho Oyu and 4 were Russians: Maxut Zhumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov (Central Sport Club of Kazakhstan Army) summited Cho Oyu on May 3. The Siberia Cho Oyu Expedition (Gleb Sokolov, Yuri Uteshev +3) also summited (Gleb and Yuri, May 22).
Elsewhere, Yuri Koshelenko went for Melungtse with Nickolay Totmjanin and Carlos Buhler. The expedition aborted high up on the mountain, after Yuri contracted HAPE. Iljas Tukhvatullin had to cancel his project due to two eye surgeries. Serguey Bogomolov is continuing his project "14K" - he and Gia Tortladze joined the Spanish Manaslu expedition. The expedition was aborted after a big storm and lightning.
