Renato Casarotto's body found on K2
17:01 p.m. EDT Oct 2, 2003
The body of renowned Italian mountaineer Renato Casarotto was found at the foot of K2 this August. Casarotto died on the mountain in 1986, K2’s deadliest year. 27 climbers reached the summit; 13 people lost their lives.

Casarotto was on his third attempt that summer to scale K2’s previously unclimbed South Pillar. But he turned back a thousand feet below the summit due to bad weather. He’d reached the bottom of the South Pillar and was walking along a glacier on his way back to Base Camp when he fell into a crevasse.

This August, a group of the Kazakh climbers who were on K2 found Casarotto’s body and transported his remains to the Gilkey Memorial for burial.
