Rakaposhi: The Taj Mahal of Karakorum, part 1
Nov 19, 2004 20: 20 EST
Rakaposhi, the Shining Wall, is also known as Dumani, the Mother of Mist. Towering as an impressive massif with several points, the highest of them is 7,788 m (25,550 feet) high.
The mountain, as beautiful as her names, poses well visible from the Karakorum Highway, her silhouette dominating the Hunza Valley, West of K2 in Pakistan.
In PeakWare’s summit log, Faisal, from Lahore writes, "Rakaposhi is a ‘Taj Mahal’ of Snow. Once if you see it, You want to see it again."
The routes on Rakaposhi
Local outfitters describe the area as surrounded by the glacier valleys of Biro, Barpu, Bagrot and Pissan.
Rakaposhi has three climbable sides: From the Biro glacier on the SE, from Jaglot valley on the NW and from the Pissan glacier on the West through the Ghulmet face.
Most expeditions attempt the Jaglot side. The mountain provides a demanding climb, snow/ice lower, and rock outcrops on the upper half.
Although not routinely visited, Rakaposhi has been a chosen climbing target since the early 19th Century. The first summits would nevertheless come much later.
