Live Video from Broad Peak Camp 1 - Camp 2 Set!
image story

Jun 21, 2004 14: 45 EST
American climbers, Chad Kellogg and Rory Stark have set camp 2; they are the first to reach this altitude on Broad this season. According to Chad, they may be able to reach the summit in about 10 days. And on their way up Chad will be shooting video, images, and posting dispatches all live to the world.

Check out the link to see the first live video ever shot from high camps in the Karakorums brought to you by Contact 3.0;

"Broad Peak Camp 2 is established. Rory and I got anearly start from Camp 1 and booted in the route to Camp 2 for the first time this year. We are staying at 19,000 ft. At Camp 1 again and intend to carry another load to Camp 2 (20,800 ft) in the morning. When I climbed onto the upper ridge I really fealt like I was climbing toward the summit. From Camp 2 you can see the route unfolding. With good weather and snow conditions I could summit within ten days. The two Americans could be the first to the top this year.

Well I spent a second night at Camp 1 and got a 4:00 AM start for Camp 2. Rory and I were able to make it to our high point yesterday in only two hours. The next two and a half hours were spent booting in the next mile up onto the first glacial pressure ridge. We placed a cache at 21,600 ft. The cache is actually between Camps 2 and 3. As Rory and I were descending we ran into two Austrians drafting our steps. They were planning to set up camp next to our cache. Hopefully we can work together to establish Camp 3 and the route to the summit. Horse power is key when kicking knee deep steps through four inch breakable crust. Rory and I have kicked in 3,000 vert of the route in the past two days. We descended 6,000 ft. to base camp. Tomorrow is a rest day! The next trip up may be a summit bid. Rumor has it that summit winds could be perfect in four or five days."

Chad Kellogg is a native of Washington State. He has climbed Ama Dablam, Aconcagua, Denali, and won the speed climb on Khan Tengri in 2003. Currently he is on an expedition to Pakistan; Broad Peak and K2 double header. Longer-range goals include speed ascents on 8,000-meter peaks and alpine style first ascents.
