Lafaille Safe, Urubko Summits
09:11 a.m. EDT Jul 18, 2003
French climber Jean-Christophe Lafaille, who summited Broad Peak with Ed Viesturs on July 15, 2003, was taken by helicopter to Skardu after being brought safely back to Base Camp. Simone Moro, who is also on Broad Peak, reported that Lafaille suffered from pulmonary problems after the summit. Too ill to make it down the mountain on his own, Lafaille was assisted to Base Camp by Viesturs and Denis Urubko of the Kazakhstan 3 in 1 Expedition team. They were met by a helicopter that transported Lafaille, his wife, Katia, Viesturs and Italian climber Alberto Magliano to Skardu. Lafaille will be returning to France shortly.
When Denis Urubko came to Jean-Christophe’s aid in the vicinity of Camp 3 and accompanied him down to Base Camp, he was aware that his opportunity to reach the summit of Broad Peak this expedition might be over. However, his Web site announced that Urubko just reached the summit and is now descending to Camp 3. After a three day rest, the team will begin their ascent of K2. Congratulations, Denis!
Denis, the Kazakh team, and several international climbers are going for Broad Peak and K2 in Alpine style, as the climbers are fresh off of Nanga Parbat.
