K2 Third SUMMIT PUSH wave Wrap Up - climbers 3 hours from summit
image story

Jul 28, 2004 05: 56 EST
Around five hours ago, 16 climbers left for a third, and possibly final wave of K2 summit pushes this week: Scoiattoli Italian teams Mario Lacedelli and Luciano Zardini left midnight (local time) for the summit, along with four Swiss climbers, Kari Kobler and four high altitude porters. So did the Andalusians Manuel González, M.Morales and M. Salazar. They plan to reach the summit around 9:00h local time (Midnight EST).

Also Inaki Ochoa left C4 for a summit push at 3:00 local time after a speed climb to C4: It took him 6 hours to get from BC to C2, and 5 hours from C2 to C4. Inaki went up with a Romanian climber after his original partner, Alex Txicon, had abandoned his attempt.

The weather forecast predicts almost 50% increase in winds: From this weekends and Monday's 9-13 m/s to 15-19 m/s tonight through Thursday for the summit level.

Previous summiteers current locations:

All four Scoiattoli Italian team climbers who summited this morning are spending the night in CIII.

All five Italian commemoration climbers (Montagna) are back in BC: Karl Unterkicher, Ugo Giacomelli, Silvio Mondinelli, Walter Nones and Michele Compagnoni. No news of other team members in high camps or on new summit bids.

Al Filo Spanish expedition: All back in BC. Tomorrow, if weather permits, Juanito and Edurne will be airlifted to Islamabad, and fly the next day to Spain.

K2 North:

Nives, Romano and Luca climbed up to 7000 m via the North ridge. They are now back resting in BC. Summit bid planned for next week (the snow is reported not yet settled).
