They were the best team on K2. That's why the mountain kept one of them. Manel de la Matta didn't survive the Magic Line. He died in camp one.
"K2 Magic Line 2004 expedition has confirmed the death of Manel de la Matta this morning in Camp I. Oscar Cadiach, Jordi Corominas and Valen Giro are back in BC, from where they have sent the following report:
“Today, August 19th 2004, we have to report the sad news of team member Manel de la Matta passing away this morning in Camp 1, on Negrotto Col (6400m). He was on his way back down from K2. Manel has been the main supporting-force in the team, and we dedicate our success to him, for ever and ever.
Jordi Tosas and an expedition speaker will hold a press conference this evening, at 19,30h CET, in Museu Mecior Conet de Barcelona.”
Oscar Cadiach and Jordi Corominas left their tent at 8100m at 4:00 am, local time, August 16. Oscar Cadiach soon decided to turn around. Manel was waiting for him in camp 4.
Oscar and Manel reached camp 3 on the Magic line route, August 16, and rested there. Manel had minor signs of pulmonary edema, and that's why he couldn't join the summit bid. The climbers came down slowly on the fixed ropes below C3. Manel passed away in Camp one.
