K2 Alert - 3 climbers missing
Agu 2, 2004 13: 23 EST
This mail just in from the Magic Line team:
The team reports that 3 climbers part of the International team disappeared on K2 this weekend. The climbers started their summit bid July 28, from camp 4 in bad weather.
The Magic Line climbers were not told of the missing climbers until yesterday (local) when they were told by climbers of the International team, as these were leaving BC.
The Magic Line climbers immediatly tried to radio the missing climbers and got no answer until 15:00 (local time). Then two weak voices contacted BC radio stating that they were trying to get from C4 to C3. There is no news from the third climber.
The Magic Line and Andalusian climbers, with help from Japanese climbers quickly assembled a rescue team and went up the mountain to search for the climbers.
Unfortunately the bad weather and the previous lack of communication between climbers on the mountain forced them to abort the rescue.
The report has also been confirmed by phone to ExplorersWeb by the Magic Line tam's press agent.
ExplorersWeb is compiling more details and more reports will be published through the day.
