K2, Magic Climb, Manel - and the world
Agu 20, 2004 10: 05 EST
The community was shocked by the news on Magic Line yesterday. The small expedition's magic climb, outside the K2 anniversary spotlights, impressed everyone.
Climbers mailed in pictures of Manel and their own thoughts.
"I'm shocked and sad from this morning story on ExplorersWeb. I have met Manel in June at K2 Base Camp and was moved by his simple and friendly personality. He was, in my mind, not just a great climber, but also a great person. His smile is engraved in my memory forever. I remember shaking his hand and telling him to please come back alive. To have the same strong head that made him turn around 60m from Everest summit. We know K2 is a "savage mountain", but we only really realize it when it takes the life of someone close to you. I share Oscar, Jordi, Jordi and Valen’s grieve. My prayers will accompany you and Manel's family."
In Italy, readers were delighted by the Magic team's recognition of Casarotto:
"Renato was our Magister, we come from the same city and mountains, we are really happy for this, the links and the summit of Jordi."
And another from a veteran climber: "Renatto Casarotto is deservedly back in the news of late for the Magic Line climb this month on K2. It may be worth comparing some of the incidents of K2 '86 with those of Everest in '96. For one, Cassarotto fell into a crevasse near K2 basecamp and was able to have one final conversation with his wife. But unlike Krakauer in '96 with Rob Hall, everyone at the '86 K2 basecamp who overheard the final dialogue had the genuine decency and class NOT to spit it out to the press."
And another, from California: "Thank you for your coverage of this years gripping and extraordinary events on K2. Those of us "in the know" are quite aware that the human drama of a Tour de France or a tennis tournament, while compelling in their own right, pale in comparison to the life-or-death struggle involved in ascending (and descending!) the King of Mountains. Edurne and Jordi have earned their place in climbing history... seemingly the best climbers in all genres of the sport hail from northern Spain these days... again thanks, it was unforgettable..."
There you have it, Manel is gone but the Magic Line expedition's spirit came across. Big time.
