Female climbers of Nanga Parbat
07:31 a.m. EST Nov 7, 2003
The 50th Anniversary of Nanga Parbat’s first ascent allows an opportunity to take a closer look at some of the climbing history on this formidable peak. At 8,125m, Nanga Parbat, the “Naked Mountain,” is the ninth highest in the world. For this reason, perhaps it would come as no surprise that more than double the number of female climbers have reached the summit of Nanga Parbat than that of the world’s second highest mountain, K2. But both numbers are exceedingly low.
Consider that in the past fifty years, more than 75 women have stood atop the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. By contrast, only five women have ever attained the summit of K2 since its first ascent 49 years ago. All five are now dead. Only twelve have summited Nanga Parbat in the last 50 years. Of them, two were summiteers of K2: Wanda Rutkeiwicz and Liliane Barrard. Liliane became the first the woman to summit Nanga Parbat in 1984. Two years later, Wanda and Liliane reached the top of K2 on June 23rd.
