Compagnoni's grandson summits K2!
Jul 26, 2004 10: 45 EST
More summits! At 17.15 hr local time, about 45 minutes after Mondinelli and Unterkircher summited, Walter Nones, Michele Compagnoni, and Ugo Giacomelli followed suit.
For Ugo, this was his first 8000er! What a way to start. Michele Compagnoni’s grandfather was the first to stand at the summit of K2, 50 years ago, and for Karl Unterkircher, he has now summited both Everest and K2 without the use of supplementary oxygen.
The summit push took 14 hours in all, and no doubt these climbers are all extremely tired. Everyone has their fingers crossed as the descent is undoubtedly the most dangerous part of the climb. Reaching the top of an 8000m mountain is routinely called the ‘half summit’; as you are only halfway to safety at that point. We still have yet to hear about the Al Filo team.
