China/Tibet's great loss - Rena dies, Bianba Zaxi seriously injured
May 28, 2005 08: 38 EST
May 27, the China's Tibet mountaineering expedition of 11 people was caught by rockslides, and lost top climber Rena (Ren Na). The climbers were enroute for a preparation climb in Karakorum, when the transportation vehicles suddenly were caught in the slide.
Rena died, 10 were injured, one in serious condition. Tibetans Cering Doje, Rena and Bianba Zaxi had only G1 and BP left for the complete list of all 14, 8000ers (they had earlier also climbed BP fore summit). They joined forces for Hidden Peak (G1) this summer, when the tragedy struck.
Rena, 39, was hit directly on his head when a rock broke through the Jeep he shared with other 4 people. He lost his consciousness and passed away before a Pakistan military helicopter took him to further medical assistance. Rena left behind a 11-year old daughter.
Bianba Zaxi was hit on his neck; he was in a critical situation till only a couple of hours ago; May 28, 8:00 am local time. Bianba Zaxi made it through. The G1 expedition is suspended.
