Annie eat your heart out
14:46 p.m. EDT Oct 8, 2003
One of the more controversial stories of late was when ExplorersWeb wrote about Annie Seel and her motorcycle trip to Everest’s North Side.
Well, it seems the Russians again take whatever is out there to the extreme. For them it’s not enough to ride a motorcycle to the mountain, but hey, why not go up the mountain as well. That picture to the left is of a couple of Ruskies hauling their bikes across a crevasse on Mount Elbrus back in the day. We couldn’t find a date, however, that picture suggests it was maybe earlier than the 70’s.
Besides deep snow, crevasses, and possible avalanche danger, some of the other problems they faced were keeping their hands and camera’s warm. The team reached 4200m before turning around – that was their goal. The Russians wanted to prove that an engine could work at high-altitude, and they did. Later on another expedition made it as high as 4800m before poor weather turned them around. It appears to date that a motorcycle has yet to reach the top of Elbrus. Annie, are you looking for another expedition?
Mt. Elbrus is in Russia and is one of the '7 summits'. It rises 5642m.
