Alpine Club of Saxony sets date, route for Nanga Parbat expedition
13:51 p.m. EST Feb 3, 2004
Markus Walter, a member of Alpine Club of Saxony’s expedition to Nanga Parbat this summer, just sent the latest update on the team's plans. The crew has chosen the Diamir Face for this year’s attempt. They depart on May 20th, intending to set up Base Camp below the Diamir Face by end of May. The team will spend 10 weeks on the peak, building in the extra time to wait out a bad weather spell or two.
Expedition leader Christian Walter led Club's first 8,000m expedition to Nanga Parbat in 1993. The team attempted the classical Rakhiot (Buhl) Route, but did not make the summit. Now, 11 years later, Christian is making good on his vow to return. Joining him this year will be his brother Markus (who has climbed four 8000ers), Joerg Stingl, the second German to climb Everest without oxygen, and Jens Triebel and Carsten Beichler, who each have made first ascents on rock climbs in Brooks Range and Grade X sport climbs. Rounding out the team is 64 year-old Guenter Jung, who has 40 years of climbing experience and has summited several 7,000m peaks.
11 years after their first attempt on Nanga Parbat, the Alpine Club of Saxony returns this May. This time, the six member team will attempt the Diamir Face. The Club was founded in 1992 and Nanga Parbat was its first 8,000m expedition. In subsequent years, they’ve been to Cho Oyu, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II and Manaslu.
