Jul 26, 2004 10: 39 EST
Today at 10:30h (local time) Alberto Iñurrategi and Jon Beloki finally reached the summit ofl Gasherbrum III (7.952 m). “It has been hard; we are tired, but fine and happy otherwise. Weather is good, just a bit too windy. We are soon heading down”
Third team member Jose Carlos Tamayo was forced to turn back middle way on the final couloir.
Climbers contacted BC from CIV, on their way back down. Alberto and Jon plan to gather their gear and camps on their way down. They are expected back at BC tomorrow.
Iñurrategi and Beloki’s successful ascent is the second summit ever of GIII. A Polish team- Wanda Rutkiewicz, Alison Chadwick-Onyszkiewicz, Janusz Onyszkiewicz y Krzysztof Zdzitowiecki- summated on August 1975. A rusty iron peg is the only remain founded by the Bask climbers of the former expedition.
Alberto Iñurrategi has already climbed the fourteen eight thousand meter peaks on Earth. Along with Jon Beloki and Jose Carlos Tamayo, both experienced climbers, he planned to attempt GIII and GIV. Bad weather and loads of snow have forced the climbers to attempt only GIII.
