Al Filo summits K2 - Edurne Pasaban 6th woman ever!
Jul 26, 2004 10: 41 EST
Edurne Pasaban, Juanito Oiarzabal, Juan Vallejo, and Mikel Zabalza have all summited K2 at 16.30 hrs local time along side the first two Italians, Silvio Mondinelli and Karl Unterkircher. 45 minutes thereafter, three more Italians summited - Walter Nones, Michele Compagnoni, and Ugo Giacomelli.
Earlier it was reported that a sherpa was on a summit push as well, however, it isn’t known if he summited alongside the other climbers. Now that all 9 from the summit push have made it, the tedious climb down begins.
The summit push is far from over. Having already been going for 14+ hours, all nine are no doubt extremely tired. In comparison to Everest, where summit times are typically in the early to late morning period of time, these K2 summits occurred in the afternoon. Not uncommon for Everest’s not-so-little sister, but a bit tricky to say the least.
Weather was reported to be ideal on the way up. If it stays that way and the climbers make it down very cautiously, they will hopefully be safe. Even if it takes half the amount of time it took them to summit, say 7 hours, they won’t make it down to Camp IV, 7800m, until after 2300 hrs local time. And it is not unlikely that some might be returning after midnight.
