A Triple Crown
09:20 a.m. EDT Aug 11, 2003
Early reports are in that Nives Meroi, Romano Benet and Luca Vuerich have reached the top of Broad Peak. If confirmed, the trio has accomplished the remarkable feat of scaling three 8000ers in 20 days, all without oxygen. They ascended GII on July 19; summited GI only one week later on July 26, and Broad Peak on August 8.
This will be Nives' fifth 8000m peak. Considered Italy's strongest female climber, she has also ascended the Central Peak of Shishapangma.
For Nives, Romano and Luca, it was a long, laborious slog to the summit through bad weather and knee-deep snow. Further details are expected after their return to Base Camp.
Meanwhile, Trieste climber Mark Tosutti plans to continue his attempt on the summit if weather permits. Fellow climber Alessandra Canastri previously turned around due to health problems.
The group returns to Italy on August 22.
