2003 Karakorum the year of hattricks and a preliminary summit count
17:46 p.m. EDT Aug 16, 2003
2003 has been a significant year in the Karakorum. A paradigm shift in mountaineering has taken place as mountaineers has scaled several 8000ers over a short period of time. AdventureStats released this morning awesome tables of this increasing phenomenon of hattricks (three 8000ers within lesser than four months) in the Himalayas.
The first hattrick was that of Messner in 1982. Later Carlos Carsolio actually summited 4 8000ers in 77 days. One of the toughest was that of Rob Hall in 1994, when he summited Everest, Lhotse and K2 within 2 months. There are currently 23 hattrick climbers, 7 of them this year only! In the table of the fastest hattricks, the top six are three Swiss and three Itailans. Interestingly enough, they all followed the same sequence; G2/G1/BP. Two women enter the accomplishment this year; Edurne Pasaban LH/G2/G1 and Nives Meroi G2/G1/BP.
Check out the fastest hattrick ever and other cool stats regarding this new era in mountaineering.
