The 2008 summer Olympic torch will be remembered by generations, but possibly not the way China and organizers had intended.

Everest became an army base on both sides as the torch made its way to the summit last week. Frustrated climbers, a shut down Lhasa, iffy climbing claims, a surprising Chinese leader, gagged reporters and internet attacks on ExWeb all trailed the sad flame to the top of Tibet's sacred mountain. A veteran reporter who rode across Himalaya to help Tibet already 50 years ago wrapped up the past week in a sharp yet amazing editorial.

In other news; Makalu and Dhaulagiri had summits this weekend, and Fedor set another adventure record.
